Ferrari 328 GTB ( Non ABS Model) 1988
The Ferrari 328 GTB is a mid engine, V8-powered, two-seat sports car that succeeded the iconic Ferrari 308 GTB. Although it retained the proven mechanical foundation of the 308, the 328 introduced significant refinements to its bodywork, chassis, and engine. The most notable upgrade was an increase in engine displacement from 3.0 to 3.2 litres, delivering improved power, torque, and overall drivability.
Renowned for its reliability and ease of maintenance, the Ferrari 328 is widely regarded as one of the most practical classic Ferraris to own. Unlike many other Ferrari models of its era, routine servicing can often be carried out without removing the engine from the car, making ownership less complex and more affordable.
The GTB designation stands for Gran Turismo Berlinetta, identifying the fixed-roof coupé, while the GTS refers to the Gran Turismo Spider, featuring Ferrari's distinctive removable targa roof panel.
The model name "328" reflects the car's engine specification: 3.2 litres of displacement and eight cylinders.
Power comes from the final evolution of Ferrari's naturally aspirated, transversely mounted 90-degree V8 Dino engine. This compact transverse layout maximised space efficiency within the rear mid-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration while contributing to the car's balanced handling and agile performance.
Today, the Ferrari 328 GTB is celebrated as one of the most usable and desirable classic Ferraris. Its timeless Pininfarina styling, dependable engineering, engaging driving experience, and strong history of appreciating values have earned it a lasting reputation among collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The Design
The Ferrari 328 GTB retained the timeless Pininfarina styling of its predecessor while introducing a series of subtle yet effective refinements. These revisions not only enhanced the car's appearance but also improved its aerodynamic efficiency. As with earlier models, the body was largely hand built by Ferrari's renowned coach builder, Scaglietti.
The updated design softened the sharp wedge profile of the 308, featuring a more rounded front end and a redesigned rear valance. Integrated body coloured bumpers blended seamlessly into the front and rear bodywork, creating a cleaner, more contemporary appearance. These styling cues mirrored those introduced on the Mondial 3.2, including the radiator grille and front lighting arrangement, giving Ferrari's V8 range a cohesive family identity.
Other exterior refinements included the removal of the cooling louvres behind the retractable headlamps, a larger front bonnet radiator extraction vent first introduced on the 308 Quattrovalvole, and redesigned exterior door handles that offered both improved ergonomics and a more modern appearance.
The cabin also received a comprehensive redesign. New seat upholstery patterns, revised stitching, redesigned door panels, and updated door pulls created a more luxurious interior environment. The switchgear was modernised throughout, while the distinctive orange on black backlit instrument cluster borrowed from the legendary 288 GTO brought a more contemporary feel to the cockpit. Viewed through the ergonomic Momo steering wheel, the driver was presented with a clear, driver-focused instrument panel dominated by a large central tachometer and speedometer.
Production numbers further underline the exclusivity of the 328 GTB. Just 1,344 GTBs were built worldwide, with only 130 right-hand-drive examples officially supplied to the UK. By comparison, Ferrari produced 6,068 examples of the 328 GTS, including 543 UK right-hand-drive cars. As a result, the GTB's elegant fixed-roof silhouette, combined with its rarity and the highly sought-after pre ABS "convex" wheels, has made it the more desirable model among many collectors and enthusiasts.
