A quietly significant 911 – often overlooked, but all the better for it.
Not just a Carrera 3.0, but a particularly authentic and seemingly original example – UK supplied, RHD, and retaining the character that so many have lost over time.
Looking every inch the icon it is, with its Silver metallic bodywork, Fuchs alloys, Carrera decals and that definitive whale tail spoiler. Inside makes a statement in red tartan – it really couldn’t be any cooler.
Backed by a history folder containing the original book pack and service book, along with a large number of invoices and receipts providing evidence of strong, ongoing maintenance. Further supported by 31 MOT certificates (dating back to 1980) charting the steady and credible increase in mileage and accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. More recently, the car has benefitted from a comprehensive engine rebuild and new clutch just 2,500 miles ago, carried out by a respected independent specialist.
Originally supplied by Motortune Ltd, the Porsche main dealer in Kensington, on 23rd November 1976 for the 1977 model year. Factory options include a sunroof, air conditioning (though not operational at present), Tempostat (cruise control), tinted glass and a 5 speed manual gearbox. The spoilers and fog lamps were a dealer-fitted addition in March 1987, giving the car the appearance of the ‘Sport’ specification.
Owned by the same business from new, accounting for the first three registered keepers, the car then changed hands in 1980, 1986 and twice in 1994, before remaining with owner number seven for almost 30 years until its final change in 2024.
Produced for just two years (1976–1977), the Carrera 3.0 represents a pivotal and short-lived chapter in 911 history, bridging the gap between the Carrera 2.7 and the later 911 SC. Offered only in ‘Rest of World’ markets, the USA and Canada were never (originally) blessed with its presence. Just 3,687 were produced, tiny numbers in comparison to the SCs and Carrera 3.2models which followed.
Powered by a 3.0-litre flat-six, derived from and sharing the aluminium architecture of the contemporary 930 Turbo, the Carrera 3.0 delivers strong, torque-rich performance with a more refined and usable character than the higher-revving 2.7 Carrera that preceded it.
It is a pure pleasure to drive — responsive, engaging and refreshingly simple, yet entirely at home in the modern world. A 911 to keep, to enjoy, and to quietly treasure.
