The Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 is the car that defined the modern super saloon. By installing the drivetrain from the flagship Mercedes-Benz 600 into the W109 body, Mercedes-Benz created something that had never really existed before – a discreet four-door with genuine high performance and long-distance refinement.
This example has been fully restored to the highest standard and is genuinely one of the best 6.3s we have seen or owned. The presentation throughout is exceptional and the colour combination of Tunis Beige Metallic over Dark Brown leather works perfectly on the car, giving it a strong period look without being overstated.
It retains its original, numbers-matching 6.3-litre M100 V8 with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, the unit that made these cars so formidable when new. Performance is still deeply impressive. Contemporary road tests recorded acceleration that bettered a Porsche 911S and matched a Ferrari 365 GTC, yet it does it with the effortlessness and composure only a big Mercedes-Benz saloon can offer. The automatic transmission and air suspension deliver exactly the ride and refinement the model is known for, while still allowing the car to cover ground at remarkable speed.
The specification sets it apart. Factory air conditioning and a factory power sunroof are both ultra-rare on a 6.3 and make a real difference to usability and value. The car also retains its correct Becker Mexico radio with power antenna and is supplied with its original Data Card, owner’s manual and service booklet.
Everything about this car reflects the quality of the restoration and the strength of the underlying example. It drives as well as it presents and has the solid, composed feel that only the best 6.3s seem to have.
