The first of the legendary ‘105 Series’ Alfa Romeos, the Giulia saloon (A Maple House Classics favourite!), landed in 1962 and remained in production until 1977 - Don’t let the boxy design fool you, it boasted a drag co-efficient of 0.34cd and outperformed many sports cars of the era with the famous ‘Nord’ twin cam engine. Previously in the shadow of the coupe, the saloon is now gaining serious attention and is fast becoming the favourite of many 105 connoisseurs and collectors.
This particular 1973 ‘Super 1.6’ is an extremely rare, UK Market RHD car - Originally ‘Blu Olandese’ from the factory, it was used in the BBC series of ‘Life on Mars’. It then underwent an extensive restoration in 2012 where the colour was changed to ‘BiancoSpino’. Following this, the car then enjoyed attention in print, where it featured in the magazine ‘Classic Cars’. Presented in exceptional condition, with many improvements made and with one of the most impressively curated history files that we’ve seen, it’s a brilliant opportunity for someone looking for a rare right hand drive 105 Giulia saloon that’s ready to be enjoyed.
Exterior
The ‘BiancoSpino’ paintwork presents extremely well, having been completely ‘soda blasted’ and repainted in the UK throughout it’s restoration in 2012. The steel wheels also present well in their standard ‘off white’ colour, with only a few blemishes. Headlights are clear and glass is all without marks. Inner headlights have been replaced with mesh to aid engine airflow and lower weight, but inner headlights are present and come with the vehicle.
Interior
The ‘Alfa Cinghiale Vinyl Skai on Bedford cord’ interior again presents extremely well. All trim is correct and present, and heating and updated audio system all work as expected. The rear seats are original and in brilliant condition, where the fronts have been retrimmed following an extensive search of matching material. All leather is in good condition on both the seats and doorcards. The large wood rimmed steering wheel is without damage / cracks and all instrumentation works, and the dashboard also presents extremely well.
Mechanical
Mechanically, the car is exceptional - Last rebuilt around 27,000 miles ago - The 1600cc Nord engine benefits from 2 Litre cams, windage plate, custom exahust manifold (Which is a piece of art) and system in 316 stainless steel. Easy to fire into life and eager to be driven. The engine itself is wonderful - A revvy and enjoyable motor benefitting from a fully balanced crank, rods, pistons, flywheel, clutch and pulley with more low down torque than expected, and a beautiful noise from the custom manifold and exhaust. A 123 Distributor handles spark and the gearbox and rear axle were also refurbished and are sharp and enjoyable to use.
The chassis is extremely predictable and progressive, giving a huge amount of confidence and feeling - Aided by the aluminium T Bar and ClassicAlfa suspension package.
