This is for the buyer looking for a really nice 356.
When our 356 expert, Graham, says ‘This is good’- you know it’s something special.
For an enthusiast who likes to have something special and wants to mitigate against big surprises in the future, buying ones like this is always the best plan long term.
Being the later C and an SC model, you have one of the best 356 for driving and touring you could ever wish for. With the 95 hp engine and disc brakes all round, performance and comfort are vastly improved over previous models. The factory electric steel sunroof brings further refinement – a very rare and costly option at the time.
This exquisite 356 C SC coupe is one of the finest examples of a largely original car that we have seen.
It scores highly for its overall condition. As far as we can see, the metalwork is original with minimal repairs, giving it a tight, crisp appearance that few restored cars can manage, most obvious in the panel alignment and a general cohesion. This is a 356 that has survived and survived because of very caring owners.
Supplied new in early 1964 by Competition Cars of Culver City, the official Porsche importer for Los Angeles, California. It was later part of a private collection in Japan before arriving in the UK, where it was offered at auction.
It caught the eye of marque specialist Andy Prill in 2002, who was especially impressed by its remarkable originality. When it was stripped to bare metal for a paint refresh in its original Champagne yellow jacket, he noted no corrosion, no accident damage, and no previous restoration work. In 2003 it was passed to Porsche specialist Robert Gant of Gantspeed Engineering, who carried out a transmission rebuild.
Subsequent owners continued with Gantspeed, relying on them for the 356’s maintenance and servicing, all, as reflected in a detailed folder packed with invoices, all pointing to fastidious care without compromise.
Of particular benefit is the 2007 rebuild of the factory-fitted Type 616/16 air cooled 4-cylinder, uprated from its original 95 hp 1.6 SC spec to 1,720 cc, delivering increased power and torque, better response, and a far more engaging drive.
When you first see it, you will know. When you sit behind the wheel and head onto the road, it will become immediately obvious.
This is not the cheapest 356 – and it shouldn’t be. Cheaper cars often cost far more in the long run and don’t deliver the same enjoyment or reassurance.
It has been fully inspected by our own 356 expert – we are more than happy to put our stamp of approval on this 60+ years old classic, supplying our own warranty for your peace of mind.
If it’s in budget and if you really want one to enjoy, wherever you are in the world, this 356 deserves to go on the top of your list. Don’t delay, examples like this come along very rarely.
