Here we have this truly magnificent 1938 Alvis 12/ 70 Anderson tourer (1 of 4 built)

Alvis factory records show that the rolling chassis of OJT 727 was supplied to Hugh Anderson Ltd of London on the 26th of November 1938, and then re-delivered after a final test on the 3?d of January the following year. The body maker was Whittingham and Mitchel, also of London.

As an errand boy for a high class Sherborne grocery store, your correspondent delivered provisions to a notable street occupied by solicitors, bank managers and business owners. By co-incidence, the very same Alvis 12/ 70 was often parked in a garage belonging to a local solicitor and at that time, in the 1950s, the car appeared to be very smart (to a thirteen year old errand boy anyway!)

Fast forward a few years and the Alvis was frequently spotted driving around the same town at high speeds with what appeared to be Sherborne school boys at the helm. The motor car then disappeared from sight and mind until several decades later when it returned to the Sherborne Historic Vehicle Rally, entered by its very proud owner Peter Smith. Peter was one half of Smith and Cave of Blandford motor body repair specialists with an excellent reputation for quality repairs and paintwork.

He purchased the 12/ 70 in the late 1960s, saving it (extraordinarily) from the scrap yard and set about a nut and bold restoration that was carried out over a long period to concours standard. The result is a credit to Peter and his colleagues.

There is little point in detailing the full restoration work carried out as we understand that everything was rebuilt or renewed to the highest possible standard. OJT 727 has won numerous concours awards and did duty as Peter's daughter's wedding car:

The Alvis has remained in the same family for almost fifty years and maintained to a high standard. Red Triangle Auto Services has carried out maintenance for the last two years (invoices for this phase included in the file total in excess of £3000) and the motor car has been regularly MOT tested. Full weather equipment, including a tonneau cover and side screens, are supplied; the specially designed aero screens act as side wind deflectors and an Alvis eagle mascot and town radiator cap are also included in the sale.

Designated as SC13. 22, the 12/ 70 is supplied with an original instruction book and lubrication chart, two copy spare parts catalogues, images, MOT test certificates, invoices, the V5C registration certificate and its replacement, together with a Red Triangle Auto Services valuation, dated December 2017, for £50, 000. The history documentation is contained within a leather Classic Folio.

Alvis factory records show that the rolling chassis of this Alvis AFX 222, was supplied to Hugh Anderson LTD London on 26th November 1938. Here the body was designed, it was then hand built by Whittingham and Mitchell, London. It was then returned to Alvis factory in Coventry on the 3rd January 1939.

Only four of these type of bodies were built and 3 still exist main difference being helmet wings and no running boardsshe was restored to concourse condition by peter smith of smith and cave Blandford and is still in immaculate condition, underneath is as good as the top and still wins at many shows.
