Well-prepared 12/50 special with desirable L201 SD short-stroke engine and extensive VSCC event history. Maintained and upgraded for usability and performance.
Originally supplied by Henlys of London in July 1926 and delivered with a Cross & Ellis tourer body, chassis 9809 has a continuous known history from new. Early ownership included a publisher and, from 1929, a silk merchant—both London-based—before the car moved north post-war. By the 1950s, it was residing in Fulwood, Preston, and in the 1970s it was developed into a 12/50 special for VSCC competition.
Its restoration in 1983 by David Royle saw the car evolve further. The new alloy sporting tourer body was well proportioned and remains in excellent structural condition today, as does the L201 SD 1645cc short-stroke engine installed during the rebuild. This engine is known for its brisk performance and responsive character, making it one of the most desirable 12/50 units.
The Alvis was actively used in Vintage Sports-Car Club events throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including Silverstone and Prescott. It was also displayed at the VSCC Golden Jubilee gathering at Malvern in 1983 by then-owner John Morgan. Today, it presents as a well-maintained and mechanically sound sporting tourer with a strong visual identity and purposeful stance.
The body, fitted by David Royle, has stood the test of time, with doors still fitting tightly and panels remaining well aligned. Finished in a traditional style with neatly stowed weather gear—hood, sidescreens, and tool kit—this Alvis is equipped for practical use, not just occasional outings.
Thanks to the respected SD engine and active support from the Alvis Car Club, ongoing maintenance is accessible and well supported. Known for their dependability, several 12/50s are in daily use today—including in central London traffic. With correct setup and care, this car could easily follow suit, offering enjoyable pre-war motoring without undue fuss.
This 1926 Alvis 12/50 SD combines pedigree, usability, and proven engineering. Ideal for continued road use or further VSCC events, it’s ready to be enjoyed. Contact us to discuss viewing or arrange a test drive.
