A Journey Across Time and Continents

Built in 1953, chassis #421/200/187 is the first of only five MkII Targa Florios. It was sold new to Mr. Patell in East Pakistan, who later changed his name to G. H. Abasy following the partition. This car’s unique history includes being transported to Bangladesh, where it was regularly used and blessed with Arabic script, still visible inside its doors. In 1973, Mr. Abasy managed to repatriate the car to the UK amid political unrest, a testament to its significance in his life.

Over the years, the car has passed through the hands of notable owners, including Sir Richard Gaskell and historic racer Chris Wilson. Its extensive history file chronicles its participation in hill climbs, tours, and the Targa Florio retrospective in 1999. Meticulous care and restoration over the decades have preserved its authenticity and performance.

Technical Evolution and Restorations

Upon its return to the UK, the car was refitted with a rebuilt Bristol 100B engine, replacing the original BS4 lost in Bangladesh. In 1998, it underwent a bare-metal respray to restore its original color, and in 2003, a comprehensive engine rebuild was completed by South Cerny Engineering.

Recent works include ice blasting to clean road grime, a new boot floor with an extra-deep wheel well, brake overhauls, a new radiator, and a Sebring-style windscreen.

Historic Significance and Provenance

This car’s storied past is meticulously documented in an extensive history file, including correspondence from its original owner, historic invoices, and race entries. Its FIVA passport further underscores its credibility as a significant historic vehicle. With only 14 Targa Florios ever built, and just five MkIIs, this car represents a rare and sought-after piece of automotive history
