Developed off the back of the thrice Le Mans winning Jaguar D-Type, there is no question that when the E-Type hit the roads in the Spring of 1961, it was one of the most advanced sportscars of the era. And whilst a standard E-Type is still capable of keeping up with modern traffic, today there are upgrades that can ensure that it does so reliably and safely. This beautifully restored Roadster is one such car.
Imported in 2001, this original US car was delivered to Andrew Tart for a complete restoration. Andrew Tart is well known in the Jaguar restoration circles for having headed up Classic Motor Car’s restoration department and overseen the restoration of 9600 HP, the Geneva Motor Show car. And so started a five year, back to bare metal restoration, the body completed by the renowned Martin Robey. All of this is documented with both invoices and photographs. It was after the body was finished that the first series of upgrades were fitted to the car.
The block and crank were sent to Coventry Boring. The block was re-sleeved to accept bigger liners, increasing the capacity to 4.5 Litres. Corrillo rods, JE pistons, a skimmed head with 2 inch inlet valves, uprated cams, polished crank, Bob Beere High Performance distributer – all go to build an engine with a claimed 300BHP. A competition clutch was fitted to help manage the power to the drivetrain.
Brakes are AP Racing, including 11.5 inch vented discs and there are adjustable GAZ dampers all round. It goes without saying that all parts were renewed or restored to the highest standard before being refitted. A Borg Warner 5 speed gearbox ensures both ease of use and capable of long-distance cruising. Completed in 2006, the current owner bought it through Eagle E-Type in 2007.
Upon buying the car, he decided he wanted further upgrades from Eagle. This included the fitment of an aluminium bonnet, the fabulous modified Eagle seats that allow for more room, rear anti-roll bar, fuel pump and radiator. This is but a snapshot of a long list. An upgraded Eagle exhaust system was fitted in 2010, who continued to service the car for over a decade.
In 2014, an independent specialist stripped the whole of the underside of the E-Type to repaint. The rear cradle was removed, stripped, the diff rebuilt, and all components painted or plated. The front suspension received the same treatment. This is all documented in numerous invoices and photographs. In 2015, the car was retrimmed in red.
In 2021, Valoros Race & Restoration Services completely rebuilt the head. Most recently, in March 2025, Classic Performance Engineering gave it a fluids service and a new MOT in preparation for the next owner.
This very high specification, fast road Roadster has been maintained to the highest of standards. A huge history file documents all of the work and upgrades. Rarely have we come across such a well sorted E-Type Roadster, especially in such a desirable colour scheme. Valued in 2018 at £250,000, we are today asking £140,000.
