Needing little introduction, the Ford GT40 is among the upper echelons of all time great automotive race cars. Conceived as a crude and powerful message to the world's most polished race teams, it served as a symbol and feat to the collaboration of some of the best minds in racing coming together, with the financial assistance of one of the worlds largest auto manufacturers. It dominated its class in the mid to late 60s securing podiums, including victory four years running in the late 1960s.
Driven by the likes of Brian Redman, David Hobbs and Jacky Ickx and readied for the 1968 Season, three small block GT40s appeared on the grid, prepared by JW automotive (who had taken over the Ford racing team) and backed by GULF oil the now iconic powder blue and Merigold orange livery was born, which in our opinion represents the ultimate colour combination available.
Lovingly hand crafted by GT Developments of Poole, acknowledged to be among the very pinnacle of GT40 recreation builders worldwide this 'wide body' GTD40 is an excellent recreation of the aforementioned legendary 1969 24Hour Le Mans race winning GT40 (sporting the no.6 race number). The vehicle rolled off the production line in August 1990. Having had a number of owners in the first two decades of its life, it was purchased by the Chief Engineer of Sunseeker, who oversaw a comprehensive and thorough restoration with meticulous care and attention, to ensure the closest possible accuracy. The current custodian is a prominent and fastidious collector and has professionally dry stored the car since 2014 among a carefully curated and pampered mix of wild and wonderful cars.
Highlights and Summary
Many hours have been spent sourcing original parts and ensuring that it can hold its own on the road as a fast/ competitive race car, and the attention to deal is second to none. With it's genuine 377ci (5.4-litre) racing unit engine, supplied by Ford Motor Sport USA, the car boasts 450bhp and has 4x Weber IDF carburettors.
In 1989, both Autosport and Autocar magazines tested an original GTD-built example of the car. Autosport magazine said in their article "An original GT40 is priceless, but an equally charismatic alternative is the GTD40. The pair are indistinguishable from five paces, let alone 50, so faithful is GTD's replica even to the discerning eye. The GTD is no "kit car", but a thoroughbred in every sense."
The car had new carbs in 2023, at which time it was also serviced. was serviced in 2023 it has done no more than 100 miles since that time and will have an MOT carried out prior to sale.
