The name "Wraith" has roots in Rolls-Royce's history, first appearing in 1938 as the Rolls Royce Wraith, a car built on a chassis designed to be paired with bespoke coach-built bodies. The term "wraith" means "ghost" or "spirit," aligning with Rolls-Royce's tradition of ethereal naming conventions like the Ghost, Phantom, and Spirit of Ecstasy.

In its modern incarnation, the Wraith was reintroduced in 2013 as a luxury grand tourer aimed at a younger, more dynamic clientele, blending the brand's hallmark sophistication with unprecedented levels of performance. The modern Wraith is based on the same platform as the Rolls-Royce Ghost, but it was re-engineered to suit its coupe format.
