According to Henry Ford’s autobiography, it was in a sales meeting in 1909 where he first exclaimed “Any colour the customer wants, as long as it’s black”. Of course, back then he was referring to the Model T. But 115 years on, those words remain one of the most well-known automotive quotes.

Fitting then, that the context of that quote links so well the shade of this example of arguably Ford’s most iconic vehicle. Henry Ford would pass-on long before the Mustang began production, instead it was a project undertaken whilst his son, “Hank the Duece” was at the companies helm.

Hank and his team did a good job, developing and delivering what has become not only an automotive icon, but a pop-culture icon. The Mustang in it’s many guises remains a poster car for generations of automotive enthusiasts. This example is one of the most iconic. A 1968 model, Mustang Fastback.

Lets talk about the looks; the car is finished in a Black, as per how we’d imagine Henry Ford would’ve wanted his. The paintwork and bodywork is in excellent condition, with an almost wet look shine, and has just had some remedial paintwork completed by Spray Shack in Essex.

The Fastback lines manage to be elegant, yet aggressive at the same time. The flowing lines are accented by excellent brightwork, with chrome adoring the mirrors, bumpers, grilles, light surrounds and window frames to name just a few areas.

The wheels are new American Racing Torq Thrust items, finished with satin black centres and satin silver lips, very similar to the wheels fitted to the Fastback featured in Bullitt. They’re wrapped in a matching set of tyres, 215 section at the front and 225 section in the rear.

Inside, you’re greeted with a beautiful Burgundy interior, with the claret shade extending from door to door, and across the carpet. The seats feature a fluted stitching pattern, and they show limited signs of wear and the car benefits from front and rear seatbelts to keep all the family safe.

The theme continues to the centre console, and up to the two tone dash, the top half a darker almost oxblood shade. The steering wheel is a 3-spoke slotted Moto-Lita wood item, with a polished stainless steel centre boss. A nice finishing touch that adds some valued contrast to the red. Finally, the interior also benefits from just having had both window regulators replaced, a fiddly exercise that offers you some peace of mind when summer comes back around.

Engine wise, it’s a good’un. Fitted with a 302ci (4.9-litre) small-block Ford V8. The 302 is a Windsor engine, fitted in a wide array of Ford’s and Mecury’s and has been beloved since it’s launch by tuners and enthusiasts for it’s reliability and tuneability.

To ensure it’s continued smooth running, the car has been regularly maintained, most recently it has had a mechanical check-over, tune-up, oil and filter change and an MOT at Back to Life Cars in Essex. The 302 is mated to a AOD (automatic over drive) transmission, which shifts smoothly and allows for plenty of comfortable cruising miles.

Four wheel disk brakes ensure that you’ll be stopping promptly, with grooved discs up front to help keep the pads clean. The suspension and steering has also been unscrupulously checked over too, with new leaf springs, shackles and coil springs fitted to ensure the perfect drive.

The Mustang is a true icon, and this one is ready to offer it’s next owner many years and miles of joy. In spite of it’s age, thanks to the reliability of the Windsor V8, and excellent parts support you can use a Mustang year round without great fear. If you want a slice of classic American muscle, you should look no further.
