EXTERIOR

Finished in timeless metallic silver, this low mileage 1.6 GTI presents in very nice solid condition. The paintwork, although not perfect, is free from any scrapes and the contrasting plastic trims are unfaded. Being really picky there is a discreet cosmetic repair on the front bumper and the offside driving lamp has a small crack. The windows are original all round and the registration number can still be found etched into the glass, including the windscreen. Looking along both sides there are no unsightly car park dings and the panel gaps are spot on. Not a concours example but one to be driven and enjoyed.

INTERIOR

In line with the low mileage of only 61k the interior is very tidy. The attractive Monaco tweed has worn very well with no rips or damage to the fabric, all the bolsters are still nice and firm, and there is no sagging to any of the centre panels. The red carpets retain a nice red hue and they’re protected in the footwells by a full set of black overmats. Being really picky there are three small screw holes on the passenger side of the dash, but otherwise the original leather-trimmed steering wheel is present and correct, and the door cards are immaculate. A very nice place to be, the only modern upgrade being a Pioneer CD player with USB and Bluetooth connectivity.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine bay is clean and tidy, not overly dressed but to a nice original standard. The zingy 1.6-litre engine fires up first turn of the key and idles up to temperature smoothly. The current owner has recently fitted a stainless Milltek exhaust so she’s a little louder than standard which certainly adds to the sense of occasion out on those twisty B roads. The suspension has also been uprated with Bilstein B6 shocks all round. For the new keeper’s peace of mind, the cambelt and water pump were replaced in May 2024, and more recently a professional welding repair has been carried out to the exhaust manifold.

HISTORY FILE

This nicely presented and very usable 1.6 GTI was first registered in June 1988. Supplied new by Jim Pink (Wallingford) Ltd. it has now driven only 61k miles. The original stamped service book is present along with a selection of invoices and MOT certificates, the V5C showing 6 former keepers, a clean HPI report, and the original spare key.
