1950 Allard J2

Eligible for the Mille Miglia, Goodwood Revival, Monaco Historic Grand Prix, and Le Mans Classic, this Allard J2 is a rare and remarkable find with a rich racing history and impeccable condition. Perfectly restored and maintained, and ready to deliver in prestigious historic events.

History: Announced in 1949, the Allard J2 quickly gained acclaim and achieved significant racing success in both the UK and America. Of the 99 built, most were exported to the USA for racing. This particular J2, was delivered on January 26th 1950, to the Allard dealership 'Tate of Leeds' and sold to Maurice Wilde in April 1950, registered as MWE 254.

The proud new owner Maurice Wilde, was an enthusiastic racer, soon replacing the standard Ford Mercury V8 with the highly sought-after Cadillac OHV V8. Throughout 1950 and 1951, Wilde competed in numerous events, securing several podium finishes, including a notable result at Croft in August 1950. Grand Prix racer T.C. Harrison, a friend of Wilde, also drove the car, achieving a third-place finish at Gamston.

Subsequent owners included Norman Woodhouse, Arthur Welton, Malcolm Dungworth (a personal friend) then Paul Hope, and Terry Bennett, who took the car to the USA in the late 1960s. The J2 remained in the USA until 1987, when it was repatriated and became part of Nick Mason’s Ten Tenths Collection. Supposedly raced by Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame, it later passed through the hands of notable racing driver Frank Sytner, Arthur Kelly, and Malcolm Verey, who prepared the car for the Mille Miglia.

The last two custodians have lavished on MWE 254, The last major overhaul completed in 2021 by Pace Historic, with limited use since as our client has been concentrating on his Pre-war racing stable. It’s because of his passion and enjoyment of pre-war racing that I now offer MWE 254 for sale.
