The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Homages are never easy. Big shoes to fill, the difficult second album, etcetera. It’s fair to say Mercedes-Benz faced an uphill battle in the late noughties when it decided to build a modern-day interpretation of its legendary 300SL ‘Gullwing’ from the 1990s.

The boffins in Stuttgart had an ace up their sleeves, however, and that was AMG. Until that point, the performance skunkworks in Affalterbach had only ever been permitted to modify an existing model in Mercedes’ alphabetical range. Now, free of the shackles of , AMG’s engineers could really flex their muscles.

The result? A gorgeous long-nosed front-mid-engine Gran Turismo with gullwing doors, a socking-great V8 engine producing 563HP, a super-stiff all-aluminium chassis and a luxurious interior littered with retro design cues. Modern-classic status was all but confirmed pretty much as soon as the world clapped eyes on it at Frankfurt in 2009. And then the automotive press drove the thing…

You only had to grab any automotive magazine from the newsstands back in 2010 and you were almost guaranteed to find column inches dedicated to the SLS – journalists waxing lyrical about the car’s circuit prowess, the aggressiveness and responsiveness of the bespoke 6.3-litre V8, and the surefootedness and poise of its chassis.

Suffice to say, the mighty 300SL was given the reverence its truly deserved by its maker, which smashed its own brief and well and truly out the park with the SLS AMG.

The beautiful right-hand-drive Iridium Silver SLS AMG presented here, chassis number 003738, was delivered new to the United Kingdom in November of 2010. In the years since, the car has passed through the hands of a small number of owners and been regularly serviced by Mercedes-Benz main dealers. Today, the odometer reads just 19,986 miles and the car will be delivered with a fresh service and MOT certificate from Mercedes-Benz Oxford. Presented in excellent overall condition, with only minor signs of wear on the seat bolsters, this SLS AMG is a beautiful and exceptionally-maintained example of Mercedes’ modern-day classic.
