EXTERIOR

Finished in one of our favourite Mk2 Golf colours, this rare G60 Syncro looks superb beneath our studio lights. The car has just been treated to a full machine polish by our in-house detailer and the result is what you see here, glossy Tornado Red paintwork with a deep and even shine. We have carefully inspected the paint and quite remarkably it’s almost entirely original with only the bonnet having ever been refreshed after picking up a few stone chips. Elsewhere around the car the plastic trims remain in very nice original condition, all with an excellent texture and no fading issues. Despite being one of only a few hundred G60 Syncros ever produced, there is little to distinguish this model from a standard big bumper GTI, other than wider wheel arch trims and some additional badges. Completing the look are attractive 15-inch Sebring wheels, a rare G60 option that was standard fitment on the Rallye.

INTERIOR

Sitting inside it’s hard to believe this one has driven 117k miles. The interior has worn incredibly well and, much like the exterior of the car, is unrestored. The sports seats are free from any major wear or damage, including the driver’s bolster, and the patterned cloth is first-rate. The dash and plastics are in generally excellent condition and the switchgear still feels reassuringly solid to operate. A later style CD player is currently fitted but other than that everything feels lovely and original, further testament to the car’s careful ownership since new.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The G60 engine is based on the GTI’s 8-valve unit and, unlike the 16-valve, retains the free-revving willingness that makes the standard Golf GTi such a pleasure to work hard. With 80 percent of full boost within 0.4 seconds of the driver touching the throttle, power delivery is instantaneous. Lifting the bonnet of this rare model reveals a very clean and tidy engine bay, not overly dressed but in great original condition and with no signs of any accident damage or previous poor repair. The last service was carried out in December 2023 at 189,186km / 117,555 miles. For the new keeper’s peace of mind the car has just been given a full vehicle health check with any advisory items duly rectified.

HISTORY FILE

Built in July 1990 but not officially registered for the first time until May 1992, it’s understood that this particular car was a pre-production model used by VW AG as a factory demonstrator for the first 3k miles of its life. This is evidenced not only by the stamps in the original maintenance booklet but also by the ‘pre-production series’ option code, X9X. The car resided in Germany until the late nineties before being officially imported into the UK where it has now seen only 4 registered keepers.

Last serviced in December 2023 the Golf most recently benefits from a full mechanical inspection by our trusted VW specialist. In preparation for sale the car has been fitted with new front brake discs and pads, new Toyo Proxes tyres all round, a new battery, a new heater motor, and a new washer pump. The MOT is valid until November 2024.

Within the accompanying History File the lucky new owner will be presented with the original VAG service book, a raft of invoices and documents detailing the car’s UK and French provenance, an original German-text GTI G60 Syncro sales brochure, a selection of past MOTs and period photographs, a spare set of keys, and the V5C showing only 3 former keepers.
